Fishing in Costa Rica- Where to Find the Fish

With over 750 miles of coastline, anglers fishing in Costa Rica have a multitude of options. It’s a big ocean out there much of it void of fishing action. The key to successful offshore fishing is knowing where to find the fish.

There is no replacement for local expertise when it comes to finding fish. Every good captain knows where to find the fish, but you may find the following information helpful when exploring new fishing grounds.

The most important tip for finding fish is Watch for Variation. Variation can come in several forms, some obvious and some more subtle.

Los Corrientes

The tried and true method to finding billfish in Costa Rica is fishing in “los corrientes”. These currents can be spotted by a subtle change in color and in temperature. Baitfish and predators are plentiful in these currents. An experienced captain will work the edges of “los corrientes”. When fishing from Quepos, Jaco, or Herradura, captains will find “los corrientes” about twenty-five to thirty miles from shore during peak billfish season.

Oceanfloor Geography

Underwater geopgraphic structures such as canyons can increase the flow of ocean currents. The rapidly moving currents can trap bait fish and large game fish move in after the trapped bait. As with the seasonal currents, these currents may be spotted by looking for subtle changes in water color or surface temperature. Of course an experienced Costa Rican offshore fishing guide will have one eye on the bottom (GPS) and one eye on the surface looking for the subtle changes.

Floating Debris

The rainy season in Costa Rica is the hottest time of year for dorado, oftentimes bull dorado weighing over fifty pounds. The experienced fisherman knows that fish love structure, even temporary structure resulting from debris washing out to sea from rain swollen rivers. Fishing deep around weed lines, floating pallets, or logs can yield a great dorado run. Other game fish can be found beneath the debris as well.

Underwater Structure

Wrecks and reefs provide structure for large bottom fish including Cubera snapper and grouper. The structure is also home to plankton and other small organisms that attract baitfish which in turn attract big game fish looking for a meal. Remember that the main structure may be overfished while potential satellite sites around the structure are teaming with life. Larger gamefish often hang out at these quieter satellite sites.

Slicks

Keep you eye out for oily slicks on the waters surface. As big game fish such as dorado, tuna, marlin and sailfish are feeding they chase bait to the surface. Fish oils are released and the slick results. If you have found a bait slick you have found sometime of fish feeding. If you are lucky it will the trophy catch you are looking for.

Birds

Offshore birds are always fishing in Costa Rica. They are searching for bait pods, tuna feeding, or trolling billfish. Pay particular attention to the frigate birds especially those that are circling in one location. The experienced fishing guide knows that a lone frigate bird can lead you to a trophy Tuna, Marlin, or Sailfish.

When fishing offshore in Costa Rica, the importance of local expertise can not be overstated. RC Helicopter FISHING! Dave tries hand at “Heli Fishing”

For you skeptics who say the fish was dead, I assure you it wasn’t dead.

That said, I still risked my E-Flite Blade 400 for some entertainment for you
(I used 3 batteries, hence the cut) as fun and challenging for me.
I doubt most others would risk their $450 heli just to hover over the water, let alone dangle a line!

This scenario shows it may be possible to use the Helicopter for fishing, however it would be expensive fishing.

It is always terribly windy here, so on this calm day, those simple waves in the water was of no concern to a sunfish!

It also helps to have lots of fish, like in our Sand Pit Pond where they bite on hooks with no bait! (actually I used fish eggs and the hook 24″ from the bobber.
Hey, you never know, if you don’t try!
***Caution from past experience***

If the Tail rotor hits the water even slightly, it will immediately cause a crash.
Big fish can drain batteries fast. It takes and hour to charge between flights of only 6 minutes, so this could be a long process to catch a fish.
Sunfish are not big fighters.

How good are okuma float and feeder fishing reels?

I’m getting a pair of okuma motion reels for feeder fishing
For £14.99 a reel

i use three baitrunner reels for carp fishing each cost £50 so they are of a higher quality but are superb and i have mates that have bought cheaper okuma reels and are very pleased as i am with mine would not swop to any other make.the only other advice that i would give is to spend as much as you can afford .this applies to any make of reel good luck and tight lines

whats the difference between different types of fishing rods?

i am thinking of taking up fishing again which i havnt done for years. i thought there was fly and course rods and that was it. but having a wee look around i see carp rods & reels, course rods & reels, sea rods &reels etc. is there much difference? can you use a course or carp rod & reel in the sea?

coarse fishing is normally done at sea, typical marketing mate, when I was a kid you had, fly, spin and sea. nowadays, they money men make you have a rod for every single style. Keep it simple, a coarse rod for sea, a spinner for rivers and light sea and shore, and a fly rod for rivers and lochs.

How do I keep a fish alive when fishing from shore, keeping it fresh while I fish during the day?

I am going stream fishing for trout how do I keep the fish fresh while I continue to fish for more?
If I use a stringer to keep fish in the water what is commonly use to keep one end on the shore/bank?

You could go with a fish stringer or as Brandon pointed out a creel is a good go also. I’ve got an OLD wicker creel, think she be around 50 years plus (if thats anything at all) and I’ll do the same ie., use of leaves, moss, etc.. That along with fresh creek water they’ll keep nice and cool. As far as how stringer stays on shore, there’s usually a ring at the end of it ~ just put a strong twig through it and push it inta’ the ground. Common sense is goin’ ta’ be a factor, especially if ya’ have some nice size fish. Cabela’s link below has a real nice stringer if ya’ go that way…

How To Find Good Crappie Fishing Reels

Anglers across the board always have their own opinion as to the best available equipment for crappie fishing, and often, these opinions vary widely. However, when discussing crappie fishing reels, you may find that there are several avid anglers who agree with each other on the best reels to use, especially when expecting a large catch. What crappie fishing reels are most recommended by consistent anglers and why?

Because anglers tend to spend several hours out on the lake, something easy on the wrist is usually quite necessary. The St. Croix Legend Elite is one popular crappie fishing reel because it has a shorter handle that makes it easier to handle for ten or more hours. A six-foot, medium, fast action rod will work well with Lindy rigs and jigs and pick up an impressive number of large slabs in a long day’s excursion. Another crappie fishing reel to try is the G. Loomis IMX rod, which is not the top of the line but is nonetheless an excellent rod for crappie. While stiffer than the St. Croix rod, meaning that it is not as forgiving on the wrist, the six-foot medium action model is a great option for those who spend a little less time on the lake and a tough model for heavy and feisty spring fish.

A good economy purchase among the options for crappie fishing reels is the Fenwick hardcore graphite rod. For an inexpensive rod, it is quite a steal, considering that it has excellent balance and an easy feel to the hand.
